Xcode for Not Yet Techies"Using Apple Computer's Integrated Development Environment to Develop Software Applications for the Mac OS X Operating System"by Richard Stooker, President Info Ring Press and author of Secrets of Changing to a Computer Career |
Xcode is an IDE for Mac OS X ProgramsXcode is Apple Computer's Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for developing software applications for the Mac OS X operating system which is on their McIntosh personal computers. Xcode is for writing, building and testing these programs. Xcode itself is a simple graphics environment, but contains a large number of tools you the programmer or developer may need. You need Mac OS X 10.4 version or above to use Xcode. You can use Xcode to develop applications in C, C++, Objective C, AppleScript, Java and Cocoa or Carbon APIs. And for Unix. With Xcode Developer Tools you get compilers such as the gcc compiler and linkers. Large number of applications, utilities, sample projects and tens of thousands of pages of documentation. You get Software Development Kits such as the Mac OS X SDK and Java Developer Tools. You also get Automator Shell Scripts and actions. You get CHUD tools -- debugging and performance analysis tools including Shark. If you want to develop a program for an earlier version of Apple's Mac OS X for some reason, the Cross Development is there. You also get WebObjects and the gdb debugger. Next: Podcasting |
