Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger for Not Yet Techies"Extremely Well Designed Graphics User Interface and Unix Functionality"by Richard Stooker, President Info Ring Press and author of Secrets of Changing to a Computer Career |
In 2005 Apple came out with the latest version of its Mac OS X 10.4 -- dubbed TigerTiger was an advance in a number of ways, containing over 200 new features. It's an open source operating system, a graphic system built on the FreeBSD kernel of Unix, 64 bits, dubbed "Darwin." This keeps Tiger extremely stable. The user interface is visually the most advanced design in PCs. The standard interface was totally new, and named Aqua. Mac OS X Tiger uses Quartz Extreme as its graphics engine, and it displays even 3D images very fast. Also, it's built to support the Adobe Portable Document Format or PDF, the most common type of document online. You don't even need to download Adobe's free Acrobat Reader software. Quartz Extreme will display any PDF document on its own. Also keeping up the tradition of Apple Mac OS X having the best graphics, Tiger uses the OpenGL graphics accelerator standard, the fastest yet. This makes Tiger good for showing movies and playing games. I don't know why anybody would want to host a web site on their personal home computer, but in case you do, Tiger also incorporates the open source Apache web server. And of course with Tiger you get the usual array of incorporated programs, including:iDVD iPhoto iTunes GarageBank iMovie HD Also, so you don't feel tempted to go to Redmond Washington for anything, you get AppleWorks, the Mac versions of all Office software applicationsTiger also contains the older Mac OS 9 so that you can still run older Mac software. Apple's Mac OS X Tiger also contains two games: Marble Blast Gold and Nanosaur 2. Apple and Steven Jobs are doing their best to tempt you away from the W operating system. You should be especially tempted if you do a lot of graphics/photos/animation/videos/movies viewing, creating or editing. Next: Ubuntu Linux |
