Red Hat Package Manager / RPM for Not Yet Techies"Computer Careers: Using This Collection of Packages to Make Managing Linux Easier"by Richard Stooker, President Info Ring Press and author of Secrets of Changing to a Computer Career |
|
Red Hat Package Manager / RPM is basically a complexity management system for Red Hate Linux, other distributions of that operating system and even other operating systems. Red Hat Package Manager / RPM was born out of a need to manage Linux systems. Red Hat Package Manager / RPM allows systems administrators and PC users running Linux to manage it without going insaneIt is a database of installed packages, with version numbers, and can add, remove, update and verify ownership of packages. Packages are compressed archive files containing one or more files plus instruction for installing them, user permissions and ownership, plus scripts to run. See, Linux itself and its applications are open source, so the common way to obtain this software is through this compressed applications -- which must then be unzipped, numerous files moved to correct directories etc -- it's much more complicated than average PC users are used to -- or want to be used to -- which is one reason Linux has yet to reach the popularity of Windows. However, Red Hat Package Manager / RPM goes a long way toward making those chores much easier. When Red Hat introduced its first distribution of Linux in the summer of 1994, it included a Red Hat Software Program Packages / RPP. However, its engineers then searched for better solutions and came up with Red Hat Package Manager / RPM. The Red Hat Package Manager / RPM file format contains 4-part names and ends in .rpm. This file format has been adopted as an official Linux standard by the Linux Standards Board / LSB. |
