T1 Lines for Not Yet Techies"Computer Careers: Working With Medium Speed Business Internet Connections"by Richard Stooker, President Info Ring Press and author of Secrets of Changing to a Computer Career |
|
T1 lines are the standard form of medium speed, dedicated line Internet access for businesses. They are faster than DSL and cable. T1 lines are perfect for businesses that can't afford or don't need the ultra speed of T3 lines. The T-carrier technology used by T1 lines was developed by Bell Labs back when AT&T controlled everything connected to telephones in the United States. Prior to its development and implementation in the late 1960s, all telephone voice traffic was transmitted through analog lines. This was fine until about 1950, when the volume of phone calls began to increase, and AT&T realized they needed to start using digital technology. They are now the backbone of the American telephone network. Therefore, T1 lines were originally designed to carry voices not data, and although they can carry (digital) data, it's not without some technical glitches. T1 lines have three link layers and the protocol for each layer is:1. HDLC - High-level Data Link Control Protocol 2. PPP - what we use to connect with the Internet by telephone 3. Frame Relay Technically, T1 lines can be described as "time-division, multiplexed stream of 24 phone calls" - each call carried by a 64 kbps digital stream called a DSO. Next: TCP/IP |
