Sun ONE Studio for Not Yet Techies

"Computer Careers: Using Sun Microsystems' Proprietary Version of the Open Source IDE NetBeans for Java"

by Richard Stooker, President Info Ring Press and author of Secrets of Changing to a Computer Career

Sun ONE Studio is the current name of Sun Microsystems' proprietary version of the open source Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for Java, NetBeans. Sun ONE Studio used to be known as Forte for Java. It does use the NetBeans IDE, plus adds their own modules to it.

It needs the presence of the Java 2 development kit and is multiplatform. It comes in three editions:

  1. Community
  2. Enterprise
  3. Mobile

It can be used for web-based applications and Web Services. It has two editors, Form and Source.

Sun ONE Studio uses these templates to create classes:

  • Applets
  • Class
  • Empty
  • Exception
  • Interface
  • JApplet
  • Main

It uses Jakarta Ant to build files. Sun ONE Studio uses Sun ONE Application Server 7 (formerly iPlanet Application Server) as an application server. It also designs GUIs (graphic user interfaces).

Sun ONE Studio uses Tomcat to create and deploy web applications. It creates Java Server Pages (JSP). It uses CORBA applications and RMI (Remote Method Invocation) to build distributed applications.

It uses JNDI / Java Naming Directory Interface for listing distributed objects and Lightweight Directory Application Program / LDAP for keeping track of network objects.
