Sony Clie for Not Yet Techies

"Computer Careers: Using This Manufacturer's Version of the Palm Handheld Computer"

by Richard Stooker, President Info Ring Press and author of Secrets of Changing to a Computer Career

Sony Clie is the Palm platform personal data assistant (PDA) put out by that company. They license the Palm OS platform from Palm and make their own version and enhancements. The Sony Clie can do everything a Palm can and has some of its own virtues.

The Sony Clie has a feature unique to it called the Jog Dial. This is a small wheel on the left side of the handheld computer. This enables you to operate (with practice) the Clie with only your left hand -- no doubt while you're holding your cell phone in your right hand :)

The Sony Clie contains the standard parts: Address book, Calendar, To-do list, Memo pad (using Graffiti) and multimedia tools such as a picture viewer, video player and music player. You can use it as a good MP3 player if your model came with headphones.

You can also use the wireless modem to access the Internet, browse the Web and receive and send email.

Some models of the Sony Clie have a digital camera built-in

You use a HotSync cradle or cable to send changes you've made on your Sony Clie to your personal organizer software on your desktop PC.

Sony Clie uses the same basic PalmPilot technology and operating system that US Robotics introduced to the world in 1996. There are thousands of programs created by 3rd party developers to extend your handheld's usefulness. Not to mention countless games to extend its entertainment value.
