Maya is high level software for creating and editing three dimensional graphics and animation. Nearly all movies with special effects in them use Maya. Maya was originally marketed toward large studios when it was introduced in 1998 by Alias/Wavefront, but since then the price has greatly decreased and many small businesses and individuals have started to use it. 3-D graphics are created on computer screens by started with geometrical shapes -- normally triangles but they can be spheres and paraboloids. Virtual lights, lighting some parts and shading others, was an early technique for creating the 3D look. Maya uses many advanced technologies. Another early advance was Gourard shading, averaging the shading from corner to corner. Texture mapping of a surface onto the area of the geometrical shape was another. Phong shading is an advance, and it includes two variants of it. Environmental reflective mapping was another technique developed by the pioneers in this area. Maya includes such tools as:
