Lotus Domino Notes is a combination of programs that go together to enable people to work together more efficiently. Lotus Domino Notes are the original groupware products.

Lotus Domino Notes together are a comprehensive set of tools for gathering, organizing and disseminating information. It includes email, messaging, discussion forums, information reporting, a group project tracking system, business process automation system, knowledge management tool and web application system.

Lotus Domino is a server program that runs the applications and hosts the information. Lotus Notes is the client program that runs on employee workstations. Both now support a full range of common Internet standards and protocols.

Lotus Domino controls access to its database, which is a collection of documents (called notes) and indexes.

Lotus Domino is actually a set of three servers:

Mail Server
Applications Server
Enterprise Server

Lotus Domino Notes also comes with application development tools - the most powerful and useful is an object oriented environment called Designer

You can use Lotus Designer to create applications with Notes Formula Language, LotusScript (Lotus's version of BASIC) or almost any other common language.
