LISP is a computer programming language created in 1959 by John McCarthy. LISP is short for List Processing, and was invented to deal with symbol manipulation, easily working with data strings. Because of its interactive nature and its ability to compute with symbolic expressions rather than numbers, it is used to program "intelligent" computers for the investigation of Artificial Intelligence / AI. LISP uses built-in procedures called primitivesIts prompt is an asterisk. The version still in great use today is Common LISP.
