JNI / Java Native Interface for Not Yet Techies"Computer Careers: Helping Businesses Use Java Programs With Legacy and Other Non-Java Applications"by Richard Stooker, President Info Ring Press and author of Secrets of Changing to a Computer Career |
|
JNI / Java Native Interface would not have to exist if the world was perfectly as Sun Microsystems wanted it to be. In that world, every organization in the world would use the Java programming language exclusively for all its applications. In the real world, a lot of organizations do use Java applications but not exclusively. In the real world, a lot of businesses still use applications that were written many years ago. Called legacy applications, these programs have proven themselves over the years and no business likes to spend money to change something that's working well. JNI / Java Native Interface enables developers to integrate new Java applications with legacy programs written in C or C++. JNI / Java Native Interface is an APIInvoke methods create a Java Virtual Machine (JVM) in native applications, so older applications and new Java programs can be combined and run together. The competitors of JNI / Java Native Interface are Microsoft RNI and Netscape JRI. JNI / Java Native Interface prevents the exposure of the JVM implementation detracting from native code. The Invocation API creates a JVM inside a C program. |
