JMX / Java Management Extensions for Not Yet Techies

"Computer Careers: Developing Java Applications that Help Large Organizations Perform Useful Chores"

by Richard Stooker, President Info Ring Press and author of Secrets of Changing to a Computer Career

JMX / Java Management Extensions are tools for Java developers for configuring, managing and monitoring Java applications at runtime. JMX / Java Management Extensions use Java classes called Managed Beans to explore predefined parts of the applications.

Large companies and other big enterprises must manage a lot of different hardware and software. JMX / Java Management Extensions can use and integrate with existing technologies for their Resource Management.

They configure applications using property files. They expose -- application components, attributes and configuration to management tools. This is called instrumentation.

Therefore JMX / Java Management Extensions provides cross-platform, consistent applications and resource management

One other tool for this is SNMP / Simple Network Management Protocol, which manages resources on IP networks. Java developers are weak on this.

It has tools for monitoring:

  • Platform health
  • Configuring resources and collecting application statistics
  • Debugging options
  • Application performance

This introduces JMX / Java Management Extensions.
