Jakarta Struts for Not Yet Techies"Computer Careers: Using This Open Source Framework for Developing Web Sites and Applications"by Richard Stooker, President Info Ring Press and author of Secrets of Changing to a Computer Career |
|
Jakarta Struts is an open source web development program that is part of the Apache Project. Craig McClanahan created Jakarta Struts and donated it to the Project in May 2000. The goal of Jakarta Struts is to provide an open source framework for building web applications. It provides developers with an extensible environment with a core flexible control layer of that includes XML. They use the Model View Controller (MVC) application architecture and design paradigm -- also known as Model 2 -- from the programming language Smalltalk. Model 2 is a User Interface (UI). Jakarta Struts provides its own Controller componentFor the Model portion, it can interact with all standard data access technologies such as Enterprise JavaBeans, JDBC and Object Relational Bridge. For the View portion it works with standard representation systems such as XSLT and Java Server Pages. Jakarta Struts is for building web sites with the Java-based technologies Java Servlets and Java Server Pages. Therefore it is dependent on a servlet container. Servlets are small programs that perform tasks similar to CGI but more efficiently. Therefore, Jakarta Struts can prove useful to everyone from individual developers to large scale enterprise teams. Next: JavaBeans |
