J2SE for Not Yet Techies

"Computer Careers: Using Java to Develop Object Oriented Software Applications"

by Richard Stooker, President Info Ring Press and author of Secrets of Changing to a Computer Career

J2SE / Java Standard Edition is the middle division of the Java language, after Sun Microsystems split the language into sections to better help developers and businesses. J2SE / Java Standard Edition contains within itself the JSME for compact devices and is contained within the J2EE for large businesses. It gives you the full power of Java when you aren't writing a program for large scale, distributed applications.

So J2SE / Java 2 Standard Edition is basic or standard Java. It has a Hotspot virtual machine optimized for client side processing. It also has an enhanced 2D library for GUI programs - graphics user interfaces, such as Mac and Windows that speeds up Swing.

J2SE / Java Standard Edition uses XSLT to support XML parsing and transformation

It also supports IPv6, the new and coming Internet networking protocol that is going to expand the Internet and the number of domains and users and capabilities.

J2SE / Java 2 Standard Edition has three security APIs:

  • Authentication and Authorization Server -- JAAS
  • Cryptography Extension -- JCE
  • Secure Servlets Extension -- JSSE

There's also some changes to Java syntax that programmers use. J2SE / Java Standard Edition brings in more support for outside (of Java) standards, even open source applications.

Unless concentrating on wireless and embedded programs exclusively, all Java developers should therefore be familiar with J2SE / Java Standard Edition, its libraries and capabilities.
