J2ME for Not Yet Techies

"Computer Careers: Using Java to Develop Applications for Small Computers and Embedded Devices"

by Richard Stooker, President Info Ring Press and author of Secrets of Changing to a Computer Career

J2ME stands for Java 2 Micro Edition and takes Java back to its original roots, when it was still called Oak. Sun originally developed the language be embedded in small appliances, such as microwave ovens and toasters and it didn't go anywhere until 1995, when Sun Microsystems realized that it could be used on the Internet by all computers. J2ME is the version of Java now for developers of compact devices using the Java platform.

Small devices such as car monitors and TV remote controls have limited memories and processor resources, so J2ME is Java trimmed down and adapted to such environments.

J2ME uses the Java Wireless Toolbox

And has such profiles as the Mobile Information Device Profile (MIDP) and an API for programming cell phones. MIDP adds the user interface, networking and messaging details required for interfacing with wireless/mobile devices.

There're two programming specifications in the J2ME platform:

Connected Limited Device Configuration (CLDC) -- Kilobyte Virtual Machine -- for low end devices such as cell phones

Connected Device Configuration (CDC) -- Connected Virtual Machine -- for high end devices

MIDlets are small applications, similar to Java applets, for cell phones and other mobile devices, conforming to CLDC and MIDP. J2ME must suit lots of different devices.
