SGI certifications from:

SGI certifications come from Silicon Graphics Inc, and have to do with their flavor of UNIX, not computer animation as you might think from their name. UNIX has mutated into many different varieties, and SGI certifications validates your expertise in one of the more popular dialects.

SGI certifications worth it?

Standard disclaimer:

Whether or not any certification is "worth it" is an individual decision. You alone must decide what your career goals and needs are.

Look at certifications from a cost/benefit or Return On Investment (ROI) basis. If they help you get a better paying job or make more money at your current job, they are obviously "worth it."

The problem is, there is no real way of measuring how much you can expect your income to go up as a result of any given certification. It also depends on non-related job search skills such as how well you network.

SGI certifications background:

SGI, or Silicon Graphics, Inc offers a wide range of hardware and software, including their own version UNIX, called IRIX. They manufacture a wide range of computers, from personal workstations to Cray supercomputers, chiefly for businesses and the government.

You should pursue these SGI certifications if you work with SGI products or wish to get a job at a company that does. I'd certainly recommend you consider this if you are already working with their systems on your current job. Certification would validate your skills to your employer and if you don't get a raise, help you find a new employer more appreciative of your value.

If you already know their systems well, you can take the tests by paying Sylvan Prometric $100 each. If you need to take classes, SGI offers them. Prepare to pay a lot of money, but the cost of the test is included.

1. SGI Certified IRIX X System Administrator

You must pass two tests.

Specialties are:

  • IRIX System Administration I.
  • IRIX System Administration II

2.SGI Certified IRIX System Analyst

This SGI certifications requires the above two tests plus one more: IRIX Advanced System Administration.

3. SGI Certified IRIX Network Administrator

The focus of this certification is to include networking with SGI systems. It includes the first two System Administration tests, plus one more: IRIX Network Administration
