Discover the 8 Reasons Why Now is the Best Time Ever to Change to a High Tech Career

QBasic for Not Yet Techies

"Computer Careers: Your First Language – A Good Introduction to Programming for High Tech Jobs"

by Richard Stooker, President Info Ring Press and author of Secrets of Changing to a Computer Career

QBasic is not fully developed on its own to use for programming for a computer career – although it has a more developed cousin named Visual Basic that is. QBasic is good for getting your toe wet.

However, many programmers feel that learning QBasic is a good introduction for computer programmers

It is relatively simple and, if you have Windows 95, you already have an application on your computer to start programming in it.

Microsoft "adopted" QBasic many years ago, and has included support for it for years.

If you haven’t done so yourself already, you have to install it from the Windows 95/98 CD

Put the CD in the drive, go to Windows Explorer, select the CD-ROM drive. I found it on my Windows 95 CD under the "Other" folder, and under that in the "oldmsdos" folder. In Windows 98 the "oldmsdos" folder should in the "Tools" folder under Windows 98 CD-ROM directory.

If not in those locations, keep clicking. You’re looking for 2 files, qbasic.exe and qbasic.hlp.

Once you find them, copy them (drag and drop them) to the Command folder under the Windows folder on your hard drive.

The Editor is a complete programming environment and easy to use

Once you learn it, you will NOT be ready to work as a programmer in a computer career, but you will understand many basic concepts that will prepare you to learn full powered languages.
