MCP + I for Not Yet Techies

"Computer Careers: The First Step Toward Other High Tech Jobs and More Important Microsoft Internet Certifications"

MCP+I Background:

MCP+I is an older certification discontinued as of 1/1/2001. The MCP+I means you have passed some older MCSE tests plus the tests related specifically to the Internet.

Type of MCP+I for computer careers:

MCP+I Worth it?

Standard disclaimer:

Whether or not any certification is "worth it" is an individual decision. You alone must decide what your career goals and needs are.

Look at certifications from a cost/benefit or Return On Investment (ROI) basis. If they help you get a better paying job or make more money at your current job, they are obviously "worth it."

The problem is, there is no real way of measuring how much you can expect your income to go up as a result of any given certification. It also depends on non-related job search skills such as how well you network.

Bottom Line:

The Microsoft Certified Professional + Internet credential was an intermediate certification. Not the much more esteemed MCSE + Internet, but a possible beginning certification. It must not have worked out well, because it is discontinued as of 1/1/2001.

According to them, "The Microsoft Certified Professional + Internet credential is for professionals who install and configure server products, manage server resources, extend servers to run CGI scripts or ISAPI scripts, monitor and analyze performance, plan security, and troubleshoot problems."

It was appropriate for network administrators and web site server managers.

To earn the Microsoft Certified Professional + Internet (MCP+I) certification you had to pass three tests.

The MCP certification by itself was attained by passing any Microsoft exam. The +I was much more important, since it did serve notice that you had passed not merely one but three tests, and those connected with Internet related skills.

Current MCP+I certifications are still good through 12/31/2001. Microsoft encourages current MCP+Is to move up to attain full MCSE 2000 and MCSE+Internet certification.

In other words, they don't want people to mess around and go halfway through their career training. Microsoft wants you to go all the way and not get stuck in a halfway certification such as MCP+I.

When I first started researching computer careers, I did check out the Microsoft MCP+I certification. I asked some IT pros whether it was worth it. The terse reply: "Not worth it." That advice has obviously helped save me some money. Now this certification is not really an issue.

The 3 tests:

  • Exam 70-059: Internetworking Microsoft® TCP/IP on Microsoft® Windows NT 4.0
  • Exam 70-067: Implementing and Supporting Windows NT Server 4.0
  • Exam 70-077: Implementing and Supporting Internet Information Server 3.0 and Index Server 1.1
  • OR

Exam 70-087: Implementing and Supporting Microsoft® Internet Information Server 4.0

All these exams are retired.
