Lotus certifications from:

Lotus certifications comes from an old, well respected software company, originally founded when Mitch Kapor created 1 2 3, the first spreadsheet program. It is still an active company although not the leader it started out as, and Lotus certifications prepare you to work with their software.

Lotus certifications worth it?

Standard disclaimer:

Whether or not any certification is "worth it" is an individual decision. You alone must decide what your career goals and needs are.

Look at certifications from a cost/benefit or Return On Investment (ROI) basis. If they help you get a better paying job or make more money at your current job, they are obviously "worth it."

The problem is, there is no real way of measuring how much you can expect your income to go up as a result of any given certification. It also depends on non-related job search skills such as how well you network.

Lotus certifications background:

Lotus is one of the early kings of PC software. It was started in 1982 to bring out one of the early killer aps of home software, the Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheet. It is no longer the spreadsheet king and its word processor, Ami Pro, has lost the competition to Microsoft Word. However Lotus is still powerful. Its two top products are Lotus Notes, which allows business employees to collaborate in real time on products, and Lotus Domino for developing web sites.

Lotus also makes an email program called cc:Mail which I used to use at work and like.

Lotus currently has three levels of software Lotus certifications. the first level certifies your basic expertise of one software program. The second and third levels advance beyond that, into application development.

Certified Lotus Specialist (CLS)

This is the first level of software Lotus certifications. You must pass one exam to demonstrate basic technical expertise in that program.

You can obtain Certified Lotus Specialist status in four Lotus certifications software programs:

  • Notes
  • Domino
  • cc:Mail
  • SmartSuite

The Lotus certifications exams you can pass to become a CLS are:

  • Domino Web Development and Administration
  • For developing Web sites using Domino 4.5. Skill in "planning, installing, setting up, rolling out, and maintaining a Web site using Lotus Domino."

  • Developing LotusScript Applications for SmartSuite using 1-2-3
  • "Coding, managing, and troubleshooting LotusScript solutions for 1-2-3 applications." Also, "coding and modifying applications, integrating code with the graphical user interface, and managing troubleshooting applications."

  • Notes R4 Application Development 1
  • Building a Notes database.

  • Notes R4 System Administration 1
  • "Setting up, operating, and maintaining Notes/Domino servers and client workstations." Also, "infrastructure planning and design, server installation and setup, maintenance and operations, systems security, and troubleshooting."

  • Domino Messaging Administration
  • Lotus Domain structure and messaging. Also, existing network infrastructure/communications/remote LAN access system and "Infrastructure Planning and Design, Install/Setup, Maintenance and Operations, Troubleshooting, and System Security."

  • cc:Mail R6 System Administration 1
  • "Small-site deployment, installation, and configuration of cc:Mail across multiple networks and platforms." Also, "planning, maintenance and administration, installation and configuration, client support, troubleshooting, and security."
