IBM hardware certifications come from IBM of course, the once giant and still very large high tech company. IBM hardware certifications validate your expertise with hardware manufactured by Big Blue.

IBM hardware certifications worth it?

Standard disclaimer:

Whether or not any certification is "worth it" is an individual decision. You alone must decide what your career goals and needs are.

Look at certifications from a cost/benefit or Return On Investment (ROI) basis. If they help you get a better paying job or make more money at your current job, they are obviously "worth it."

The problem is, there is no real way of measuring how much you can expect your income to go up as a result of any given certification. It also depends on non-related job search skills such as how well you network.

IBM hardware certifications background:

IBM has a huge number of certifications, and on their site they are categorized by brand category.

This is the introductory level of IBM hardware certifications levels:

IBM Certified Professional Server Specialist (PSS)

You must successfully complete IBM Netfinity Server Technical Overview (TNW02) and IBM Netfinity Technical Training (V5051 - test number 371) or any of the IBM Netfinity/NOS training courses, plus sign the certification agreement.

Successfully completing a IBM hardware certifications course does mean passing a final test on the material.

This course covers IBM Netfinity and PC server architecture, design, installation and configuration.

This is obviously for people who will be installing, maintaining and administering IBM PC servers.

Next comes:

IBM Certified Associate Professional Server Expert (APSE)

There are 3 paths to this IBM hardware certifications:

Microsoft Windows 2000

Microsoft Windows NT 4.0

Linux

IBM hardware certifications for Microsoft Windows 2000

Requires:

1) Exam 70-210: Installing, Configuring & Administering Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional AND Exam 70-215: Installing, Configuring & Administering Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

2) Exam 70-240: Microsoft Windows 2000 Accelerated Exam for MCPs Certified on Microsoft Windows NT 4.0

You must also complete IBM Netfinity Server Technical Overview (TNW02) and IBM Netfinity Technical Training and IBM Netfinity/Windows 2000 Installation and Performance Training (course name: TNI11 - test number 374).

IBM hardware certifications for Microsoft Windows NT 4.0

You must successfully complete two of the following MCP training options:

1) Exam 70-067: Implementing and Supporting Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0

2) Exam 70-068: Implementing and Supporting Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 in the Enterprise

3) Exam 70-073: Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0

You must also complete IBM Netfinity Server Technical Overview (TNW02) and IBM Netfinity Technical Training and IBM Netfinity/Windows NT Installation and Performance Training (V5051 & V5055, or combination class V5075).

IBM hardware certifications for Linux

You must successfully complete the Linux Professional Institute (LPI) Level II certification. Also the IBM Netfinity Server Technical Overview (TNW02) and IBM Netfinity Technical Training and IBM Netfinity/Linux Installation and Performance Training (course name: TNI12 - test number 376).

The Professional Server Expert (PSE) is the final level of IBM hardware certifications. You specialize in a particular operating system.

IBM Certified Professional Server Expert (PSE)

Microsoft Windows 2000

Microsoft Windows NT 4.0

Novell NetWare

Microsoft Windows 2000

You must have the Windows 2000 MCSE certification. You must also complete IBM Netfinity Server Technical Overview (TNW02), and IBM Netfinity Technical Training & IBM Netfinity/Windows 2000 Installation & Performance Training (course name: TNI11 - test number 374).

Microsoft Windows NT 4.0

You must have the MCSE Windows NT 4.0 certification. You must also complete IBM Netfinity Server Technical Overview (TNW02) and IBM Netfinity Technical Training and IBM Netfinity/Windows NT 4.0 Installation and Performance Training (V5051 & V5055, or combination class V5075).

Novell NetWare

You must have the CNE certification.

You must also complete IBM Netfinity Server Technical Overview (TNW02) and IBM Netfinity Technical Training and IBM Netfinity/Novell NetWare Installation and Performance Training (V5051 & V5052, or combination class V5072).
