Computer Programmers for Not Yet Techies"Computer Careers: High Tech Jobs Telling Computers What to Do"by Richard Stooker, President Info Ring Press and author of Secrets of Changing to a Computer Career |
|
computer programmers are the stars, the cowboys, the geeks, the sung and unsung heroes of the high tech age. They are the worker bees who get the job done. Without computer programmers with computer careers to tell computers what to do, computers would be nothing except expensive electronic junk. computer programmers come in late and stay later.computer programmers stare at code until their eyes turn purple and their brains feel like drugged fried eggs. computer programmers must understand the basics of the hardware they are using. They must understand what the end users want to do with the program. This is probably the hardest part of being a good computer programmer, understanding what non-geeks want to do with computers. Why should telephone service representatives get upset about being told they’ve performed an illegal operation? After all, doesn’t everybody? They believe they are on a mission to make computers idiot-proof, even as the universe keeps creating bigger idiots. The traditional way to start off is to major in computers in college. Classically, if you got good grades, after you graduated you got a job as a junior or assistant or programmer I. You didn’t actually write programs, you worked over programs written by others, did routine maintenance etc. In 6 – 8 months or so, if you did good work and kept your nose clean, you became a programmer. At first, you’ll still keep doing the small time chores you did as junior computer programmersLater, the boss would hand you a bunch of flow charts and specifications and tell you to write a real program yourself. Prove yourself, and you eventually moved up in your computer career to Senior Programmer. If you were good at understanding the needs of computer end users and designer programs for them, you could become a Systems Analyst. These days, of course, if you’re a promising student, a high tech company hires you as computer programmers and you start your first computer job before you graduatecomputer programmers might make $40,000 to start even without your degree. 1 year later you network your way into an Internet startup and 6 months after its Initial Public Offering, your stock options have made you a millionaire. You’re barely 25. Of course, that’s somewhat exaggerated and doesn’t apply to many people. I do know that many are underpaid, especially if they are loyal to their companies. If they are good computer programmers and are willing to market themselves and make certain computer career moves, in a few years they can begin to make truly impressive salaries.
