Active Server Pages for Not Yet Techies"Computer Careers: High Tech Jobs Building Smart, Interactive Web Pages the Microsoft Way"by Richard Stooker, President Info Ring Press and author of Secrets of Changing to a Computer Career |
We didn't always have Active Server PagesEver since news of the Internet burst upon the world a few years ago, computer careers people have been working hard to make it even better. Active Server Pages (ASP) is one of the big improvements. Active Server Pages is one of the first Internet technologies to make the web active and interactive. In 1995 it was amazing enough just to log on to a computer, type an URL into Netscape and go visit a web site which contained text, colors and pictures. Wow! That didn’t last long. We soon got bored and started demanding more. Businesses that recognized the commercial potential of the Internet also wanted to not only create a more exciting experience for their customers, but to gather information on them and take orders online as well. We didn't know the name, but we wanted Active Server Pages. So computer career software developers have been working on ways to make the Web more interactive, such as Active Server Pages. There was a big problem with some of the early developments such as JavaScript, however. The Internet is full of people still using computers with comparatively low operating speed and memory. Scripting languages such as JavaScript and Microsoft’s own VBScript work on the web site visitor’s own computer. Therefore, they are limited by the web site visitor’s computing capacity.
