VRML for Not Yet Techies 2"Computer Careers: Prepare Now for Your High Tech Jobs in the 3 Dimensional Cutting Edge of the Future"by Richard Stooker, President Info Ring Press and author of Secrets of Changing to a Computer Career |
VRML - Virtual Reality Modeling Language is following the lead of HTML and is destined to reach and exceed the popularity of HTMLVRML - Virtual Reality Modeling Language - 1.0 was static. This is changing. Developers with computer jobs are visionaries and artists. They know that people will want "active" and interactive VRML 3D sites. The official name may soon change to X3D. X3D is a next-generation, extensible, 3D graphics specification that extends the capabilities of 97. The name X3D was chose to indicate the integration of XML (which is an evolution of HTML for all aspects of net programming) with the 3D pictures/worlds people are going to soon be exploring through VRML. Judging from the sample X3D I’ve seen, it will look more like HTML does now, with <tags> etc. Virtual Reality Modeling Language VRML is also coming together with JavaThis is apparently a good match, since both are cross-platform. It will take Java applets to new heights. All this is possible now. It’s not common, because what we can do on the Internet is still limited by band with. However, technology is improving and within a few years we’re going to have nearly all the band with we can use. When that happens, we are going to wander through the Internet, exploring magnificent worlds of the imagination. VRML will also have many business applicationsRight now, you can go to a car dealer and see the cars available and learn about every single option. You can answer questions and get answers via JavaScript or some other such technique. Some dealers may be using Java to link their databases to the Web so you can order everything online. But with it you’ll be able to take a sample "test drive." Someday you’ll go to Amazon.com and your VRML "avatar" will literally pull books off the shelves and browse through them to see whether they are still interesting. If you, you will buy at a 3D cash register. Businesses can hold important meetings and conferences with their avatars online, instead of constantly traveling across the country in airplanes. By getting started now, in the infancy of this new "language," you will be positioned to benefit greatly as a Virtual Reality Modeling Language developer/programmer/designer.And of course as an employee who owns stock options in the new companies that arise to bring these technological marvels to the world. This computer career is especially promising if you have artistic talent, but that doesn’t appear to be necessary. No doubt the most intense worlds of the VRML future will be created similar to movies and games, by teams of people combining story-telling, character creating, artistic talent, design and composition, and directorial skills.
