Linux for Not Yet Techies 2"Computer Careers: Wave of the High Tech Jobs Future?"by Richard Stooker, President Info Ring Press and author of Secrets of Changing to a Computer Career |
Businesses which want to create a network of many PCs but who don't want to pay a high per-machine cost to install Windows NT are finding Linux a low cost alternative.Linux has one real disadvantage -- so far -- computer manufacturers are not cooperating with its developers in their design phases. This means that when you install Linux to a brand new model, there could be bugs that could have been prevented had developers had the chance to learn the details of the new computer (as Microsoft and Apple developers do) before its release. This will likely change in the future, especially if those millions of users tell the manufacturers and their computer jobs they refuse to buy the latest models until they know the bugs have been worked out. The good news is that when there are bugs in it, you don't have to wait for a huge company to assign a programmer to develop a fix. Anybody interested can jump in and do so. In one famous incident, when a bug was found in browsers, a patch for Linux was available on the Internet 4 hours later. It took 3 weeks for Microsoft to address the issue. The Open Source "movement" -- and many of its advocates look on it exactly from that viewpoint -- is growing.Until recently there was little to no commercial software applications available for it. Today, you can get all major software applications in it, from word processors to databases to spreadsheets. Also, you can have two operating systems on your computer if you want. I know that because Windows and its applications are so common, it could be really inconvenient in a computer career to be without it. But Linux can co-exist on a hard drive with Windows. Before you install though, make sure you read the instructions and keep a boot disk handy. Next: BeOS |
