Discover the 8 Reasons Why Now is the Best Time Ever to Change to a High Tech Career

CCNP for Not Yet Techies 2

"Computer Careers: This Cisco Certification is Your Second Step If Your High Tech Jobs Goal Is To Become an Expert at Supporting Networks Using Cisco Hardware"

by Richard Stooker, President Info Ring Press and author of Secrets of Changing to a Computer Career

Within each CCNP track, there are three tiers of expertise. Naturally, you start out at the lowest tier and work your way up. The CCNP Cisco Certified Professional is the second tier certification for the Network Support track.

According to Cisco, the CCNP indicates "advanced or journeyman knowledge of networks."

You must know not only how to install, configure and operate small business networks of under 100 nodes, but larger networks of 100 to 500 nodes.

You must know at least these protocols:

  • IP
  • IGRP
  • IPX
  • Async Routing
  • Appletalk
  • Extended Access Lists
  • Frame Relay
  • IP RIP
  • Route Distribution
  • OSPF
  • VLSM
  • BGP
  • Serial
  • ISDN
  • ISL
  • X.25
  • DDR
  • PSTN
  • PPP
  • VLANS
  • Ethernet
  • Access Lists
  • 802.10
  • FDDI
  • Transparent Bridging
  • Translational Bridging

You must pass 4 tests:

  • 640-503 Routing
  • 640-504 Switching
  • 640-505 Remote Access
  • 640-506 Support

After you get the CCNP, you can specialize further, in 5 different areas:

  1. CCNP Security:
    • Exam 640-442 MCNS: Managing Cisco Network Security
    • Exam 9EO-558 CSIDS: Cisco Secure Intrusion Detection System
    • Exam 9EO-571 CSPFA: Cisco Secure PIX Firewall Advanced
    • Exam 9EO-570 CSVPN: Cisco Secure VPN
  2. CCNP Voice Access:
    • 640-647 CVOICE: Cisco Voice Over Frame Relay, ATM and IP
  3. CCNP Network Management:
    • 640-443 MCRI
  4. LAN ATM:
    • 640-446 CATM: Cisco Campus ATM Solutions
  5. SNA/IP Integration:
    • 640-445 SNAM: SNA Configuration for Multiprotocol Administrators

Once you have your CCNP, you can also get the CCDP Cisco Certified Design Professional simply by passing one additional test.

It would actually make a lot of sense for everyone to pass both certifications, so that no matter where you go from there, you have a solid basic foundation of all aspects of networks. You increase your chances of getting a job.

Cisco also has another type of certification, the WAN Switching certification:

Cisco WAN Switching certification

The CCNP/WAN Switching certification indicates an advanced or journeyman knowledge of WAN switched networks. It shows you can install, configure, operate, troubleshoot and manage WAN switched networks.

To attain the WAN Switching certification, you must pass four tests:

  • Exam 640-419 MSSC: Multiband Switch and Service Configuration
  • Exam 640-425 BSSC: BPX Switch and Service Configuration
  • Exam 640-411 MACC: MGX ATM Concentrator Configuration
  • Exam 640-459 CWMIO: Cisco WAN Manager Installation & Operation

Once you have either one of these, it is good for 3 years, unless you move up to the final level, which is probably the most difficult certification in the industry. So you may not go that far, but it's still a good idea if you like the thought of making 6 figures a year until you retire.
