vi for Not Yet Techies"Computer Careers: Using This Handy Unix Utility to Easily Edit Text Files"by Richard Stooker, President Info Ring Press and author of Secrets of Changing to a Computer Career |
|
vi is a full screen text editor for Unix. vi stands for visual editor and has been included with almost every version of Unix for decades. It is a modal editor. It is in either command mode or input mode. When it is in command mode it is expecting you to tell it to do so. When it is in input mode, it is expecting you to type some text into the file. You just have to know which mode it is in since there's nothing to tell you. It has a number of clones which add functions to it: elvis, nvi, vim and vileThey add such things to it as multi-window editing, GUI interfaces and extended regular expressions. Although vi is popular with Unix users, nothing I've read about it makes me want to trade it for Word or even Wordpad. Next: XMLSpy |
