mod_perl for Not Yet Techies"Computer Careers: Combining the Perl Language and Apache Servers to Create Terrific Dynamic Web Sites"by Richard Stooker, President Info Ring Press and author of Secrets of Changing to a Computer Career |
|
mod_perl is a combination of the programming language Perl and the Apache HTTP web server. mod_perl creates dynamic web sites faster than CGI. mod_perl is a Perl interpreter inside the Apache webserver and it caches CGI programs into memory. It brings increased power and flexibility. You can use it to turn existing CGI programs into this and they will then run a lot faster. mod_perl allows you access to the innards of the Apache serverWhich is one reason CGI programs run faster with it. If do not have access to the server (that is, you're just renting some server space from a web host), you better ask them before you pay them any money whether or not they use Apache and if they do, whether they'll allow you to use this language. You can also use it to run Perl SSI / Server Side Includes. Programmers have written hundreds of modules for it, everything from persistent database connections, to templating systems, to complete XML content delivery systems. mod_perl is run on such sites as Slashdot and Wired MagazineUsing it, the standard Apache Registry module can provide 100x speedups for your existing CGI scripts and reduce the load on your server at the same time.
