IT Project Management for Not Yet Techies

"Computer Careers: Stepping Up to a Management Role Keeping Project on Time, on Track and Under Budget"

by Richard Stooker, President Info Ring Press and author of Secrets of Changing to a Computer Career

IT project management is the business process of managing projects that involve information technology. IT project management is basically just a specific type of project and therefore general project management principles apply to them, but also specific factors due to the demands of working with technology.

According to the PROJECT MANAGEMENT BODY OF KNOWLEDGE (PMBOK), a project is "a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product or service." IT project management is no different.

IT project management uses the "triangle:"

Time
Cost
Scope

The scope includes product and project. Product scope is the precise details of the product to be delivered. Project scope includes the tasks and phases of the project.

IT project management needs to:

Build project plans
Track work completed
Account for variances from baseline

You can get learn more from the Project Management Institute.

A project is a group of activities toward a goal, normally requested by a customer or client. Projects should produce something new and different, not reinvent the wheel. Projects should also have a defined beginning and end.

IT project management has three constraints: time, quality and costs

IT project management now has a foundation certification from CompTIA, IT Project+. Also, you can use the software program Microsoft Project to track and control IT project management.
