Discover the 8 Reasons Why Now is the Best Time Ever to Change to a Computer Career

FreeBSD for Not Yet Techies

"Computer Careers: Working With the Open Source, Berkeley Version of Unix"

by Richard Stooker, President Info Ring Press and author of Secrets of Changing to a Computer Career

FreeBSD is one of several versions of the Unix operating system descended from the Computer Systems Research Group (CSRG) at the University of California at Berkeley. FreeBSD stands for Free Berkeley Software Distribution.

AT&T, creators of the original Unix, distributed it to universities, including the CSRG. Beginning in 1976 students there began improving, enhancing and adding to AT&T's code. Eventually it was much different from AT&T's and known as BSD.

FreeBSD began in 1992 to preserve BSD after the university released it. It is open source software. It is portable and reliable and offers simplified management, optimized upgrade filesystem and has a lot of Web, email, file and support services.

Yahoo and Hotmail (at least before Microsoft bought it) run on FreeBSD

It is the core remaining BSD operating system although there are also OpenBSD and NetBSD and it's used in the Mac OS.

It also offers good security, robustness, a small footprint and the GNU licensing agreement.

It is also good as an embedded operating system for devices designed for specific functions, such as the computers in automobiles and cell phones.

FreeBSD is good for more advanced functions for embedded devices

That's because more advanced ones need Internet connectivity, networking performance and reliability.

FreeBSD also comes with a good set of development tools.
