csh and tcsh for Not Yet Techies

"Computer Careers: Working with Two Common Shells for Unix Operating System"

by Richard Stooker, President Info Ring Press and author of Secrets of Changing to a Computer Career

csh / tcsh are two common shells for the Unix operating system. The shell is the name for the user interface wrapping the guts of the operating system so that you can actually input commands to make it do something. They are probably now the standard shells included with Unix.

It stands for C shell and the other came along later and stands for Tenex C shell.

The Unix shell is a command interpreter. You input your commands at the prompt, which is probably a % or $ sign. Those of us who remember Microsoft DOS understand the concept.

The oldest Unix shell is sh, the Bourne shell. Others are the Korn shell, ksh and the Bourne again shell, bash.

Unix comes with most of these, so if you've got a shell you don't like, you can change it another.

It was started by Bill Joy at Berkeley. The other is an advanced version

It does have enhancements, such as a general purpose editor, spelling correction, programmable command, file and command name completion.

t is more powerful than c and is available on most systems on the Internet if you already included in the Unix version you're using.
