Bash shell for Unix is the new, improved version of the original Bourne shell -- sh -- for Unix. The Bash shell stands for "Bourne Again Shell" and dates back to January 10, 1988, when Brian Fox began working on developing it. Steven Bourne developed the original Bourne shell, of which Bash shell is a new version with a joking name. sh is still used by Linux. Unix is a character based user interface operating system. You work it through text commands entered at the command line, just like DOS used to work, for those old enough to remember that. The Bash shell is the user interface which stands between you and the inner guts of the Unix operating systemThe oldest Unix shell was started by Bill Joy at Berkeley and is called csh for C shell. An improved version came along called Tenex C shell, tch. Bash shell does provide for additional functions such as command history, command line editing, command completion and job control, which is the ability to start, stop and pause commands. Next: BSD |
