Apache Web Server for Not Yet Techies"Computer Careers: Using the Open Source Web Server"by Richard Stooker, President Info Ring Press and author of Secrets of Changing to a Computer Career |
|
Apache Web Server is a powerful and popular open source web server. According to the Netcraft survey taken February 2001, Apache Web Server powers 60% of all web sites, including such heavily visited sites as Amazon and MP3. Apache Web Server dates back to the days right after NCSA developed the first web browser, Mosaic. Developers there who did not go to Netscape worked on a web server and of course it had software bugs that these developers had to create patches for. They developed it by trading software patch fixes and came to call the server a "patchy" server. The first, Version 0.6.2, came out in April 1995. The group incorporated in 1999 as the Apache Software Foundation (ASF), to promote the server and all open source software. Apache Web Server is stable and scalableIt can be used as a threaded server, a process-based server or a combination of the two types of server, using Multiple Processing Modules - MPMs. Apache Web Server runs on almost all Unix/POSIX based and derived systems and on Windows 2000.
