SMTP / Simple Mail Transfer Protocol is the oldest TCP/IP protocol used in sending and receiving email. With it, email clients are configured to use it to send a message to a server, which sends it to the destination email server. SMTP / Simple Mail Transfer Protocol requires that both the sending and receiving computers be turned on and ready to process email, so it's limited in its ability to hold email. Therefore, SMTP / Simple Mail Transfer Protocol is now used with two other systems -- Post Office Protocol / POP3 and Internet Message Access Protocol / IMAP. SMTP / Simple Mail Transfer Protocol is usually what our email programs use to send email. Our ISPs use the other two protocols to receive and hold our email until we download or access it through a web site. SMTP / Simple Mail Transfer Protocol is usually configured to operate over TCP port 25It began with RFC / Request For Comment 820 of the IETF / Internet Engineering Task Force.
