Postfix is an open source Unix email server for Unix and Linux systems. It was created in the late 1990s by Wietse Venerna while at IBM. The most commonly used Unix email program is Sendmail. However, that program dates back to the 1970s and is now complex and difficult to use. Postfix is simpler and easier to use, using modularity. Postfix has higher security, reliability and performance than all other such email programs. Network administrators can change its configuration files while it's still running, so you won't lose email by turning the program off while you make some necessary changes.
