Ports can also be called connectors. They are where a device can be connected to your computer. There are two basic kinds of ports: Serial ports (or COM) -- these support sequential, one bit at a time transmission of data and are used for such devices as scanners, keyboards, modems and mice. Their communications adhere to the RS-232C standard. Parallel ports (or LPT, which comes from line printer) -- these support multiple-bit at a time transmission of data to devices, particularly printersThey used techniques of time division and space division to separate the transmission of individual bits of information to send them in parallel with each other.
