NIS / Network Information System for Not Yet Techies"Computer Careers: Using This Distributed Network Naming Database System"by Richard Stooker, President Info Ring Press and author of Secrets of Changing to a Computer Career |
|
NIS / Network Information System is a distributed database system for common configuration files. Used in conjunction with NFS / Network File System, NIS / Network Information System simplifies network administration by keeping track of a lot of computers and the resources, data and files on them. It is a network naming and administration system for smaller networks that was developed by Sun Microsystems. It operates on the OSI network model Layer 7 -- applications protocols. It maps the names of one form of network address to another form of the names of items on the network. Sun later added security and some other features and called it NIS+. NIS / Network Information System is for smaller networks such as local area networks (LANs)Each host client or server computer in the system has some knowledge of the entire network or system. A user can access all files, resources and data on the network they have permission to. NIS / Network Information System has a server, a library of client programs and some administrative tools and is Unix-based. |
