NetBIOS stands for Network Basic Input/Output System and is a programs allowing different computers within a LAN / Local Area Network to communicate with each other. NetBIOS was originally developed by IBM for its PCNetwork and was later adopted by Microsoft and became an industry standard. It is used by Ethernet, token ring and Windows Net networks. It is not routable so it must use another transport for that. When an application wants to send a message, it just uses NetBIOSThe application software does not have to know anything particular about the network, this program handles those details. A request from it is provided in the form of a NCB / Network Control Block. This has the message location and destination. It has two communication modes: session or datagram.
