NetBEUI for Not Yet Techies"Computer Careers: Using This Technology for Sending Information Through a Network"by Richard Stooker, President Info Ring Press and author of Secrets of Changing to a Computer Career |
|
NetBEUI stands for NetBIOS Extended User Interface and is an extension of that program, which provides for standard frame formats with which to send data through a network. NetBEUI is also not routable. It is the fastest protocol supported by Windows NT. It also has the benefits of good error protection, ease of implementation and low memory overhead. It has little support for cross-platform applications. It was developed by IBM for its LAN Manager product and has been adopted by Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard and DEC. Because NetBEUI is not routable, it's a good idea to use it with other protocols such as TCP/IPIf you install both protocols into each computer on a network, the server can use NetBEUI for fast communication within the LAN itself and TCP/IP for communication to an outside network.
