NAS / Network Attached Storage for Not Yet Techies"Computer Careers: Using This Technology to Store Large Amounts of Data for Large Businesses"by Richard Stooker, President Info Ring Press and author of Secrets of Changing to a Computer Career |
|
NAS / Network Attached Storage is another technology for large businesses to store large amounts of data and yet keep it where it can be accessed by the company network when needed. NAS / Network Attached Storage uses NFS and (Super Message Block) SMB/CIFS (Common Internet File System from Microsoft) protocols. NAS / Network Attached Storage shares file systems and reduces system administrative time. However, it is not as well known as SAN / Storage Area Network, another data storage technology growing in popularity. These two systems may be bridged by DAFS / Direct Access File System. It is a hard disk set up with its own network address rather than being attached to the main computer or server. NDMP / Network Data Management Protocol controls the backup and recovery of data. NAS / Network Attached Storage is file-level input/output and SAN / Storage Area Network is block-level I/OIt consists of hard disk storage, RAID systems and software for configuring and mapping file locations. It can handle a lot of network protocols, including Novell NetWare Internetwork Packet Exchange / NetBEUI, Sun Microsystems's Network File System / NFS and Microsoft's Internetwork Packet Exchange. Security for NAS / Network Attached Storage comes from snapshots and mirroring. Next: NDIS |
