Mozilla for Not Yet Techies"Computer Careers: Using this Open Source Platform to Develop Cross-platform Software Applications"by Richard Stooker, President Info Ring Press and author of Secrets of Changing to a Computer Career |
|
Mozilla began life as the nickname for the Netscape Navigator web browser back when they were first designing it to be the Mosaic killer (Mosaic was the first graphical web browser). Mozilla is now a separate project and framework with which to create cross-platform applications. Mozilla is now supported by Netscape but no longer a part of that company, which has long since been bought out by AOL. It broke away in March 1998 as an open source project. Mozilla 1.0 was released June 5, 2002It uses JavaScript, CSS / Cascading Style Sheets and their own XUL / XML User Interface Language. The rendering engine is called Gecko. They also use XBL / eXtensible Binding Language, XPCOM / XP Connect Component Model, C++, Python, IDL / Interface Definition Language, XPInstall for cross platform installation. XPFE is the cross-platform front end - created so there'd be just one interface for all developers. It's similar to DHTML. It acts as an interpreter to translate Windows to MacIntosh and to Linux etc. Mozilla was used to create Netscape Navigator versions 6 and 7, Galeon, the browser Chimera, ChatZilla and JabberZilla. Next: NFS Network File System |
