IPX / Internetwork Packet Exchange is a networking protocol from Novell NetWare used for packet routing and forwarding. It connects networks that use the NetWare operating system. IEEE 802 specifications works at the Network layer of the OSI Reference Model and is connectionless -- that means that it does not require a dedicated connection be maintained. IPX / Internetwork Packet Exchange is a routable protocolThat is it has Network layer addressing information. Acknowledgement of packets received is handled by the Novell protocol SPX / Sequenced Packet Exchange. Microsoft created its own implementation of IPX / Internetwork Packet Exchange -- called NWLink.
