grep is a UNIX command and utility considered one of the most useful and popular. It searches inside files for particular content you define. If you wrote something important you want to edit but you've forgotten which one of fifty files that information is contained it, you can use it to find it for you. So it is similar to the Find function in Windows. You can also use it to replace one thing for another after it's found what you're looking for. For example, you've just written a novel in 100 separate files/chapters. The main character is named Xavier. At the end, you realize that his real name should be Horace. You could use it to search through all 100 files/chapters for every instance of "Xavier" and replace it with "Horace." Three versions come bundled in all versions of Unix, and there are many more:
