FDDI / Fiber Distributed Data Interface for Not Yet Techies"Computer Careers: Using This Standard for Fiber Optic Networks"by Richard Stooker, President Info Ring Press and author of Secrets of Changing to a Computer Career |
|
FDDI / Fiber Distributed Data Interface is a standard for transmission over fiber optic lines in a LAN -- which can actually extend up to 124 miles (200 kilometers). Its protocol is based on the token ring protocol, and FDDI / Fiber Distributed Data Interface can support thousands of users, reflecting the ultra high speed of fiber optic networks. FDDI / Fiber Distributed Data Interface speeds can hit up to 100 Mps and include 500 nodes. Their rings can implement priority levels in token passing, so a mission critical message taken precedence over a common email message. The rings of FDDI / Fiber Distributed Data Interface can be implemented with two rings:
All data is transmitted over the primary ring. The secondary ring is a backup, providing fault tolerance - it will compensate for problems that occur in the primary ring. It is a product of American National Standards Committee X3-T9 and conforms to the OSI Reference Model. FDDI / Fiber Distributed Data Interface can be used to interconnect LANs that use other protocols. There is a FDDI-II version to allow for transmission of voice signals. Next: Fiber optics |
