Brouters for Not Yet Techies"Computer Careers: Using This Network Hardware That Is the Combination of a Bridge and a Router"by Richard Stooker, President Info Ring Press and author of Secrets of Changing to a Computer Career |
|
Brouters is a bridge and router combined into one product, offering the advantages of both. A bridge connects LANs using the same protocol, so all they have to do to data packets is pass them on quickly. Routers can forward packets on to different types of networks, determining the best route to take. Therefore brouters therefore can do either. They scan the packet to discover the most efficient way to send it on. Brouters operate at both the Data Link and Network layers of the OSI Reference Model. If a packet was sent in a non-routable protocol, brouters perform the function of a bridge, using the MAC address to learn the local recipientIf a packet was sent in a routing protocol, brouters perform the function of a router, sending them on to their final destination, which can be outside that particular network. Routers must do more work, maintaining a table of network routes, because there are many possible ways to send the packet on. These are the basics of brouters. |
