BPML / Business Process Modeling Language for Not Yet Techies

"Computer Careers: Using This XML Metalanguage for Describing Business Processes"

by Richard Stooker, President Info Ring Press and author of Secrets of Changing to a Computer Career

BPML / Business Process Modeling Language is a version of XML developed for describing business processes. It was developed by the Business Process Management Initiative / BPMI. BPML / Business Process Modeling Language also has an assocated query language, Business Process Query / BPQL.

BPML / Business Process Modeling Language has three crucial aspects:

  1. Support both synchronous and asynchronous distributed transactions
  2. Reliable security mechanisms
  3. Have project management capabilities

It is based on the concept of a transactional finite-state machine. It represents business processes as the interleaving of control flow, data flow, and event flow, while adding orthogonal design capabilities for business rules, security roles, and transaction contexts.

They hope that BPML / Business Process Modeling Language will become the standard for describing business processes, and that BPQL will become the standard (similar to SQL for databases) for managing business data through database management systems.

The first draft of BPML / Business Process Modeling Language as version 0.4 was submitted to BPMI members in August 2000 and first made available to the public in March 2001.
