Bluetooth for Not Yet Techies

"Computer Careers: Working With This Technology for Wireless Device Short Range Communications"

by Richard Stooker, President Info Ring Press and author of Secrets of Changing to a Computer Career

Bluetooth is an emerging wireless communication technology and protocol that allows devices such as consumer e-lert devices, PDAs and cell phones, within 10-meter/30 feet to communicate with each other. The primary goal of this technology is to enable devices to communicate without physical cables.

Bluetooth operates at 2.4 GHz and transfer data at a rate of 1Mb per second. It uses a radio frequency and is omnidirectional. It is only for small devices -- large computers should use the 802.11b wireless protocol.

Bluetooth was named after King Harald Blatard of Denmark, who united Norway and Denmark under Christianity in the 900s.

Prime examples of devices using this type of technology are wireless headsets, modems, and printers.

Windows CE .NET has native support to allow a device to use a Bluetooth cellular phone as a data modem, to exchange files and objects, and to use a Bluetooth-enabled local area network (LAN) access point to provide network connectivity

The host is the computer connected to the communicating device. It uses a set of higher level protocols to control and manipulate the Host Controller. That's a set of lower level protocols to manipulate the radio unit.

Profiles are key to Bluetooth interoperability:

  • GAP
  • SDAP
  • GOEP
  • SPP

The core appliance profiles:

  • Cordless telephony
  • Intercom
  • Headset
  • Dialup networking
  • Fax
  • LAN access
  • Object push
  • File transfer

These are the Bluetooth basics.
