XQL for Not Yet Techies

"Computer Careers: Working With This Technology for Finding Information in XML Documents"

by Richard Stooker, President Info Ring Press and author of Secrets of Changing to a Computer Career

XQL stands for XML Query Language and is a query language for locating information in an eXtensible Markup Language document. It is similar to XSL patterns. XQL expressions are easily parsed, easy to type, and can be used in a variety of software environments - as part of a URL, in XML or HTML attributes, in programming language strings, etc.

XQL supports boolean (something is either true or false for some condition) logic to search for specific information.

The first draft of XQL was written in February 1998

XML is now supported and being used throughout the Internet in many different ways, so there are now a lot of documents using it. Since such documents contain a lot of information ABOUT the information in the document (as well as the actual information in the document), it is possible for the right query language to learn a lot.

For instance, an XML document normally will contain information about the author, date written, subject matter etc. You could use it to find all documents about the poetry of William Shakespeare - excluding any documents that are really about his plays. That level of detail is beyond today's search engines.

Eventually we'll all have access to software -- probably as part of our browsers -- that will be able to easily use XQL or another such query language or technology to search Internet XML documents for the information we wish.
