Snort is an open source Intrusion Detection Software / IDS program for safeguarding networks. Although not powerful enough for large companies with big networks, it is a good solution for many businesses with networks which must still hold down cost while yet protecting their network's security. Snort was created by Marty Roesch in 1998.

Snort performs three basic tasks:

  1. Packet sniffing
  2. Packet logging
  3. Intrusion detection

In addition, it identifies:

  • CGI scans
  • Buffer overflows
  • SMB probes

It performs real time traffic analysis and packet logging on IP networks. Snort runs on many platforms, including Windows and Unix.

There are three kinds of Intrusion Detection Software / IDS programs:

  1. Network-based / NIDS
  2. Host based / HIDS
  3. Distributed / DIDS

Snort can also detect attack signatures and detect anomalies.
