Postscript for Not Yet Techies"Computer Careers: Working With This Software for Telling Printing Machines How to Display Published Pages in Books or Magazines"by Richard Stooker, President Info Ring Press and author of Secrets of Changing to a Computer Career |
|
Postscript is a programming language with the special purpose of describing the appearance of a printed page. Postscript was developed by Adobe Software in 1985 and was a major factor in getting that company started as the world leader of both paper publishing and e-publishing software. The PDF file format of Adobe Acrobat is the standard for online, cross-platform books and documents. Postscript files have the .ps ending -- all major printer manufacturers make printers that support itIt runs on all major operating systems. The basic purpose is to provide a cross-platform language for telling the printer where to put everything on the page and how to display it. It described the text and other elements to be printed on a page for the printer to print out. It supports the Type 1 and TrueType formats of typefaces. It is a page description language. Also, you can use Adobe Acrobat to convert PDF documents to the Postscript format. It is normally interpreted, and stack-based. These are the Postscript basics. Next: Sound Forge |
