OS/390 for Not Yet Techies"Computer Careers: Working With IBM's Flagship of Operating Systems, the Workhorse Server and Mainframe of the Business World"by Richard Stooker, President Info Ring Press and author of Secrets of Changing to a Computer Career |

OS/390 is the "flagship of operating systems," according to IBM, which installs it on their S/390 lines of mainframe servers. This is a new version of Multiple Virtual Storage / MVS, IBM's longtime mainframe system. MVS mainframes are installed throughout the business world and do huge amounts of routine computational work such as payrolls, accounts receivable, accounts payable etc - the sort of work that computers were installed for, long before anybody dreamed of networking employees or taking orders from around the world on an international network. OS/390 can also be used with UNIX systems. OS/390 is made up of elements and featuresIBM has been updating and repositioning it as a large server for networks, to help run 3-tier applications and distributed computing. A newer version of IBM OS/390 has 64-bit architecture and is called z/OS. However, a lot of MVS systems are still running and will continue to for many years, so that term is not going away for a long time. This operating systems uses COBOL for many applications and CICS for transaction programs. Today, the most common programs used are C and C++. The Unix environment of OS/390 also supports Java. Next: IBM OS/400 |
