NetRexx for Not Yet Techies"Computer Careers: Working With a Software Programming Language that Combines the Ease of Rexx with the Object Oriented Programming of Java"by Richard Stooker, President Info Ring Press and author of Secrets of Changing to a Computer Career |
|
NetRexx is a programming language which, according to its supporters, is not only human oriented, but it "makes writing and using Java classes quicker and easier than writing in Java." It combines the syntax of the Rexx scripting language with the semantics of Java. NetRexx is therefore designed to the best of both worlds. NetRexx therefore descends partially from Rexx, which was developed at IBM for their corporate mainframesBoth were created by the same man, Mike Cowlishaw. It adds the ease of use of Rexx to the object oriented programming of Java. Its source code statements are compiled into Java source statements, which can then be compiled into Java byte code, producing a program that can run on any computer supporting the Java Virtual Machine / JVM. According to IBM, Java source code is 35% longer and requires 20% more keystrokes than the equivalent code in NetRexx. According to IBM, NetRexx is blends the clean easy-to-learn syntax of Rexx with the robustness and portability of Java. It is tuned for both scripting and application development, and designed for both interpretation and compilation. It is therefore a truly general-purpose language. Next: PL/SQL |
